Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas produced by incomplete combustion of fuels such as natural and LP gas, kerosene, coal, wood and charcoal. Expert Heating & Cooling can protect your family with CO solutions.

In Genesee County Michigan, a family of six, including four children, was found dead two weeks ago in their home. A preliminary investigation revealed that carbon monoxide poisoning was the possible culprit. “It’s just a very tragic accident,” Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell told reporters Sunday. Pickell said the children, ages 2, 4, 7 and 9, were found in separate rooms in the suburban home in Fenton Township, approximately 15 miles south of Flint. The area lost power Friday night, Pickell said, and it appeared the family, who weren’t identified, used a generator. A concerned grandfather stopped by Sunday morning and tried to get in through a back door; then he dialed 911. “No matter how many investigations you conduct,” Pickell said, “seeing an entire family wiped out is a very, very sad thing.”

Exposure to CO can cause chest pains, fatigue, impaired vision and coordination, dizziness, headaches, confusion and nausea. Every year in the U.S., more than 2,000 fatalities are caused by CO from improperly installed or maintained appliances, clogged chimneys, portable fuel-burning heaters, cars left running in an attached garage, and more. Carbon monoxide is harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain, and other vital organs of oxygen. Large amounts of CO can overcome you in minutes without warning—causing you to lose consciousness and suffocate

Symptoms vary widely from person to person. CO poisoning may occur sooner in those most susceptible: young children, elderly people, people with lung or heart disease, people at high altitudes, or those who already have elevated CO blood levels, such as smokers. Also, CO poisoning poses a special risk to fetuses.

That’s why it’s reassuring to know that you can protect your family with a Carrier® Performance™ series carbon monoxide alarm installed by Expert Heating & Cooling.

The Carrier Performance series carbon monoxide alarm can put you at ease with sophisticated electronics and unmatched sensor technology that detects and records the levels of CO circulating in your indoor air. You can monitor the current CO level in your home on a large, easy-to-read digital display. When dangerous levels of CO are present, a loud, audible alarm

alerts you and your family automatically. The easy-to-read, continuous digital display allows you to monitor the level of CO in your home with updated information every 15 seconds.

To maximize your protection and your peace of mind, Carrier recommends placing a carbon monoxide alarm on each level of the house and in every bedroom. Then, follow up with weekly alarm checks and an annual, professional inspection.

Every winter when the temperature drops, your furnace can become a silent killer. Gas- and oil-burning furnaces produce carbon monoxide (CO). CO is an invisible, odorless, poison gas that kills hundreds every year and makes thousands more sick.

If you suspect CO poisoning, promptly taking the following actions can save lives:

■ Move the victim immediately to fresh air in an open area.

■ Call 911 or another local emergency number for medical attention or assistance.

■ Administer 100-percent oxygen using a tight-fitting mask if the victim is breathing.

■ Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation if the victim has stopped breathing.

Warning: You may be exposed to fatal levels of CO poisoning in a rescue attempt. Rescuers

should be skilled at performing recovery operations and using recovery equipment.
